These pages were extensively cleaned, then washed...

Mold is the worst case scenario. It is dangerous for the archival materials, and for people. Mold removal has to be done using specialized equipment and protective clothing. 

The best we can do, as of conservation research so far, is to remove the blooming of the mold on the surface, and to keep it dormant. This means thorough cleaning and dedicated preservation through environmental controls.
